Examples of Past Projects

Higher Education Curricula Development

  • In the early 2000s, Professor O’Brien played a foundational role in shaping integrative medicine education in Australia, developing three of the country’s four Master’s degrees in Chinese Medicine: Master of Chinese Herbal Medicine at RMIT University; Master of Acupuncture and Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Western Sydney University
  • Consultancy at RMIT University: utilised a new capability-based curriculum model to develop the Master of Chinese Herbal Medicine as a test case for the university. This curricula model was subsequently adopted.

  • As an Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning), she was responsible for the quality assurance of courses across a whole faculty at Victoria University

TEQSA Accreditation

  • Professor O’Brien brings deep expertise in higher education standards and regulation as a long-standing member of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) since 2013.
  • She has successfully supported multiple institutions in the private education sector with curriculum review and documentation for TEQSA accreditation processes, ensuring programs meet rigorous national standards.
  • Guided the (then) Southern School of Natural Therapies application with the Office of Higher Education to upgrade their Chinese medicine course from Advanced Diploma to Bachelor degree status in the 2000’s and then guided them to achieve re-accreditation of their Bachelor courses in naturopathy, myotherapy and Chinese medicine years later.

  • Previous Chair of the Course Advisory Committees for Southern School of Natural Therapies (naturopathy, Chinese medicine, myotherapy)

  • Psychedelic medicine: redeveloped Mind Medicine Australia’s Certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies to align with AQF guidelines; she remains Chair of their Course Advisory Committee.
